Self-Care for Writers

Lately, I’ve been resting in between writing articles. I know my greatest asset is not my writing, but my ability to stay healthy and strong despite waves of doubt, unpredictability and chaos of our pandemic world.

I realized while there is a multitude of classes provided on the craft of writing, I seldom see posts devoted to a writer’s inner world. How do we nurture our creative selves?

How do we protect it from burnout, desensitization and overwhelm?

This is the reality for many of us who are sensitive souls.

I am an INFJ so making sure I don’t give away all of my energy especially when I’m homeschooling my two young sons while working on articles, interviews and my PBChat mentorship is a real challenge.

Part of this time requires me to slow down. Another part is about being thoughtful of how I use my time.

Instead of high-intensity exercises that burn me out, I’m doing tai chi again and restorative yoga. I’m meditating more. And I’m spending time on things that give me joy.

I also wanted to create a place for writers who need support, encouragement and a bit of inspiration. A place that’s nonjudgemental, positive and supportive. This is what I do with my coaching clients and I’d love to do that for you here.

This column is like self-help for writers. I’ll be taking questions from writers about how to deal and cope with things like rejection or fear of writing. Just send me an email at and I’ll answer it.

To get you started, I created 10 positive affirmations you can tell yourself in the midst of writer’s block. These motivational words can help when you’re paralyzed with fear. Please feel free to share it.

  1. I love affirmations, and I love talking about writing. You’re totally correct, we all need more self care in these troubled times. I certainly haven’t been getting enough of it, but I’m finding new ways to express myself and talk about what’s going on with me and the world. In an odd way, it’s also a pretty good lesson on finding topics to write about. 🙂

  2. Hi Mitch! I miss you. How are you? Yes we do! I think you’re doing an awesome job of expressing yourself and helping others by being so candid. We truly need it now.
