Turning Tricks: Secrets of a Freelance Writer

Lemonade and Limephoto by nickwheeleroz

MacKenzie Phillips shocking confession on Oprah startled the world!  At least it shocked me.  And though I don’t have quite a huge secret, I do suddenly have a desire to share a tiny one.  Here it is…I don’t like every writing job I get.  Phew!  It might not be a big secret but it’s a difficult one to say.  Being a freelance writer means I get to live my dream.  I get to work at home and make my own hours which means sleeping as long as I want and going to the gym when I please.

But that doesn’t mean that every job I get is a dream one for me.  Though I am appreciative and grateful for the clients who give me the opportunity to write, sometimes it’s really just about turning lemons into lemonade. In this case it’s turning unpleasant job tasks into learning lessons.

Here’s a good example.  Sometimes I have a ton of SEO articles to do without much time to do it.  In that case, it’s kind of like what they call a “writer mill.”  I’m churning out lots of content without the pleasure of the process.  But sometimes it just needs to get done.

Here’s what’s surprising.  It may sounds boring, tedious and just not fun to pump out a gazillion words in a few hours because it is, but there is something to be gained even for these type of tasks.  Besides stable income, I’ve also learned something else.  I learned how to write FAST!  A total benefit I’d say as a freelance writer.

So maybe not all bad things are necessarily bad.  I think the whole process of following your dreams and being a writer means every seemingly unpleasant thing is not so bad after all.  In fact, I think it actually serves a purpose waiting to be discovered.

Maybe I’ll have to remember that the next time I get another rejection in the mail.
