{photo credit} You’re new. And confused. The world is your oyster, but you don’t know where to start and which one’s a dud, and which one’s holding the pearl. Don’t worry. We’ve all been there. Even as experienced writers, we sometimes slip and fall into the cracks. The good news is that there are a few red flags you can take note of now to prevent the white flag of giving up down the line. Here are five: 1. The client who wants to be your best friend. I’m all about making friends and being friendly with new and potential…

I’ve been enamored with Bruno Mars’s song Just the Way You Are Lately. I’m not a teenager, nor am I single and looking for love. But I’ve been hooked on the lyrics and can’t get it out of my head. To refresh your memory, here’s a video of the song that’s driving me crazy, in a good way. After humming the catchy tune, it started to hit me. I’m in love with the song because I feel like Bruno Mars is singing to me. It’s the same way I felt about James Blunt and Beautiful. Maybe we’re all a bit…

Ah how the world has changed! Horses have replaced cars. Computers take over the world. The word “Apple” no longer automatically conjures up images of a ripe red fruit. Grandmas communicate with their grandkids through text. And on rainy days, people find comfort in their e-readers instead of their hardcover books. It is my friend, a new age-a digital one. Yet, as we become more digital, there is simultaneously a greater need for communication. With businesses having to work even harder to get our attention, let alone our wallets, we see a shift in how we communicate. Yes it has…

Do you want to be a better blogger? Read this e-book review, Successful Blogging written by blogger Annabel Candy, to find out if this book will help you get there. I’ve been a blogging personally for 7 years and professionally for 3. But am I successful blogger? I’m not really sure. I don’t make six figures doing so, but I do just fine. With that being said, I’m passionate about honing my craft. That’s one of the reasons why my hand was raised when successful blogger of Get in the Hot Spot’s Annabel Candy asked if anyone was interested in…

{photo credit} Now that sounds bad, doesn’t it? Kind of like I’m suggesting you let others abuse you or treat you with disregard. But actually, I’m saying quite the opposite. It really depends how you look at it. Today, I listened in on a webinar done by The Savvy Freelancer’s Lexi Rodrigo with senior editor of Freelancer Folder Laura Spencer. It was an awesome combo. And I learned a lot about, “Setting Your Freelance Fees.” But I’m not here to talk about something they already covered so well there. I am excited about sharing something she said, however. Remember Your…

I can only think of one thing right now. My strong desire to match what I feel on the inside to my outer writing life. Have you ever watched a makeover show? The kind where men and women say, “Finally, I feel like how I look matches how I feel on the inside!” That’s exactly what I’m going through with my writing these days. I feel like I have an outpouring of inner wisdom, insight, compassion, emotion, struggles, hardships, inspiration to share. But they are wrapped up in my own neurosis, wading through fears of revealing too much and basic…

{photo credit} There are two main reasons why you’re sitting in front of your computer and can’t type right now. You’re either physically or psychologically exhausted. 1. Physical Exhaustion. You needn’t run a marathon to be too tired to write. You could have been up all night with the baby or that darn hour gained from Daylight Saving Time ending surprisingly zapped your energy. Sometimes returning from a trip tires me out also. (Something that I often forget when intending on working right away after vacation.) Whatever the case, being tired and low energy makes it extremely hard to get…

{photo credit} If you already know writing and getting published is tough, skip this post! As for me, I think I’ve only recently discovered the depth, cruel intensity and psychological battle that can only be described as real writing in the trenches of hard work. After more than a decade of writing (maybe even two), you would think I’d get this by now. But the realization only hit me after I started my own writer’s group. It’s been an experience that I wished I had done sooner. Although there are several reasons why I believe the members of my group…

A writer friend confided something in recently. He said he grappled with the ability to step outside him self when writing. As a result, his creations at times were a bit foggy. Although they were clear to him, they were confusing to others. I completely understand what he means. Sometimes I’m up late at night after a day of writing and my writing brain is exhausted. But I push on. As the words flow through me, I get lost in a cloud of my own creation. I’m immersed in a jungle of ideas and steeped in the visualization of my…
