Did you know in Paris, the city of love, there are bridges devoted to lovers? Our tour guide Berthon said couples come to the bridge to pledge their affection for each other.
We strolled down the bridge to take a glance at their “objects” of affection and were surprised by what we saw.
At first glance, you see a stream of metal locks bolted together to signify a solid commitment. But our guide beckoned us to look further.
As we got closer, we saw knots tied together with strips of a plastic bag, ribbon or paper. Berthon said those were the workings of couples who were less committed who could make one knot here and walk a little further and make another knot there with someone else. His favorite lock was the numerical one. We could only imagine someone pledging their devotion to one person than returning to the bridge later to unlock their love when things got hard.
It got me thinking.
When it comes to freelancing are you a metal locker or a plastic one?
Do you bolt when things get tough?
And are you 100% commitment to freelancing or are you numerically committed? You know trying out several things and planning an escape just in case this doesn’t work out for you?
To be successful as a freelancer, you need to throw away the key. I should know. About 2 years ago I attempted to be a freelancer the way someone came to the bridge and added a numerical lock. I appeared to be committed on the outside. But inside I was making a run for it scared out of my mind.
Being successful as a freelancer means being a successful business person. And I don’t know any company out there who made it doing a half ass job.
It’s the reason why it took me another two years and a handful more jobs to finally realize that to really see if I could make it as a writer, I had to fully commit to writing.
If you’re not ready to toss that key, maybe it’s the time to figure out why.
Is there something preventing you from giving this all you got?
If it’s fear, find a coach or a mentor.
If it’s a lack of knowledge, take a class or educate yourself with books.
Here’s a tip for you: Find out what’s preventing you from taking the plunge and you’ll discover what’s holding you back from success.
